Erie’s warm summer temperatures and soothing waters along the shore of Lake Erie provide many reasons to make a getaway. Relax on miles of sandy beaches Presque Isle State Park, Erie’s top attraction and National Natural Landmark. Visitors enjoy swimming, sunbathing and picnicking on Presque Isle’s seven miles of sandy surf beaches on Lake Erie. Stay to take in Erie’s sunsets, rated among the best in the world. The park features 11 public swimming beaches, as well as unguarded, dog-friendly beaches. Admission and parking are free!

On the Water

Erie is Pennsylvania’s only port on the Great Lakes, so it’s only natural that one of its best features is the waterfront. The Bayfront District is one of summer’s most popular spots, offering great ways to spend family time on the water, or a night out with friends. Catch local live bands at Rum Runners or Oliver’s Beer Garden, or dinner with a view at one of Erie’s many waterfront restaurants, including the brand new Pier 6 and Bay House Oyster Bar. There are plenty of ways to get out on the water as well! Schedule a sunset sail aboard the Lettie G Howard, a pirate’s experience on Scallywags Pirate Adventures, or a themed cruise aboard the Victorian Princess.

Get Outside!

Whether your adventurous spirit enjoys biking, running, fishing, camping or spending a day in nature, Erie’s wide open spaces and fresh waters offer a great getaway for nature lovers. Presque Isle State Park is Erie County’s most popular attraction, offering seven miles of sandy beaches and more than 13 miles of flat trails for walking, hiking and biking. With direct access to the protected Presque Isle Bay and Lake Erie, the shallowest and most productive of the Great Lakes, anglers find Erie to be an exceptional fishing destination. Walk to the foot of State Street and find a line of fishing charters waiting to help you hook a walleye, perch, lake trout or bass. Lake Erie was recently ranked third on Bassmaster Magazine’s Top 100 Bass Lakes of the Decade. Erie County is also home to many picturesque and competitive golf courses, including the newly-renovated Riverside Golf Course and the renowned Upper Course at Peek’n Peak.

Family Fun

Summer is the season for family fun in Erie County! With classic rides and new slides, Waldameer Park and Water World is a must-visit attraction for families in the summer months. Waldameer features thrilling rides and water park attractions for kids of all ages, as well as midway games, entertainment and refreshments. Parking and admission are free at Waldameer – pay only for what you ride! Be sure to take in the breathtaking views of Lake Erie from atop the gondola-style ferris wheel, or the highest hill of the Ravine Flyer II roller coaster. There are loads of things to do for families in Erie: spend a day with the lions and tigers at the Erie Zoo, ride go karts and play mini golf at the Erie Sports Center, catch a game at UPMC Park with the Erie SeaWolves, escape to the tropics at Splash Lagoon Indoor Water Park, and enjoy some hands-on fun at the expERIEnce Children’s Museum.

Festivals and Events

Summer in Erie County is jam-packed with free concerts, major festivals and weekend events, each offering a unique view of what makes the region so special. Erie is known for its ethnic festivals (like the Panegyri Greek Fest, St. Paul’s Italian Festival and Zabawa Polish Festival) and music and arts festivals like Erie’s Blues and Jazz Fest and CelebrateErie. In 2022, Erie will welcome Tall Ships Erie to our port from August 25-28, featuring dockside viewing of a fleet of tall ships from around the world.
