St. James A.M.E. Church (African Methodist Episcopal)

St. James A.M.E. Church, organized in 1874, is the oldest African-American church in the city of Erie. The first formal building was a wooden structure (gift of YMCA) moved to 218 East 6th Street then to 242 East 7th Street. In 1987 the current building at 236 East 11th Street was dedicated and in 1994 the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum placed a historical marker on the north east corner of 12th and Holland Streets.
