John Brown Tannery and Museum

At the John Brown Tannery and Museum visitors get to experience the place that abolitionist martyr John Brown helped settle and that held his early dreams of an end to slavery in America. The Tannery site is located in the village of New Richmond, about 13 miles northeast of the city of Meadville. The half-acre site retains the foundation walls of a tannery built by John Brown in the early 1800’s. The site now features display panels that interpret his role in national events leading to the American Civil War. The museum, located across the road is dedicated to John Brown and is open to the public for tours. From the museum, visitors may continue on the path to a cemetery that has the gravesites of Brown’s first wife and two short-lived children.
