Jon and Leslie, two very male, very straight, out-of-work musicians, are rooming together in New York to save money. Jon has been filing tax returns listing the pair as a married couple. However, the day of reckoning comes when Mr. Spinner, an IRS investigator, shows up and Leslie masquerades as a housewife with the aid of Jon’s fiancée. Tuesdays and Wednesdays at noon, Fridays and Saturdays at 7pm, and Sundays at 2:30pm.
The place is an affluent suburb in a mid-sized American city, the time, the “possible future,” when the national economy has slid from recession into depression and even worse. The action of the play follows the plight of some representative families as they face conditions never before imagined: job loss, businesses collapsing, the country club besieged by squatters, and their friends and neighbors turning into hoarders, cadgers and thieves. Their attempts to survive while all is tumbling down are sometimes hilarious and sometimes genuinely moving as they turn curtains into clothes, dream up new ways to make zucchini appetizing, and fight over jobs they would have spurned in better days. But while told in broad, comic strokes, their story is also a moral tale, for while the times are out of joint, the resourcefulness and resiliency of the people remain strong – and with this, the conviction that if the spirit is undaunted, renewal and recovery are sure to come in time.

The nuns at a just-barely-making-it convent go into a frenzy when an unexpected frost threatens their crop of award-winning grapes. But the nuns know something nobody else does. The grapes they harvest are not only for grape juice, but for making wine. Even though Mother Superior forbids making “the devil’s mouthwash,” the sisters secretly brew their booze to keep their small convent afloat, all while maintaining their other duties, which entangles them in some sticky predicaments while trying to salvage their wine grapes. But as the show progresses, we learn that even the holiest among them are willing to turn the other cheek in order to save their home from being shut down. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at noon, Fridays and Saturdays at 7pm, Sundays at 2:30pm.

One of the most explosive movie musicals in recent memory bursts onto the live stage with exhilarating results. When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn’t prepared for are rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, determined to exercise the control over the town’s youth that he cannot command in his own home. When the reverend’s rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren’s reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. To the rockin’ rhythm of its Oscar and Tony- nominated top 40 score (the soundtrack album reached number one on the Billboard charts and has sold over 15 million copies!) and augmented with dynamic new songs for the stage musical, Footloose celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind.
Stop by the B-R to step back into a bygone era that is all but forgotten. Agricultural, quilting, and other rural exhibits will fill the Baldwin- Reynolds House with live music, a bake sale featuring items from Katherine Reynolds’ personal cookbook, and demonstrations on rural life and crafts. Beekeeping, The French Creek Antique Equipment Club, Spinning and Weaving, Chair Caning, Embroidery, Woodworking, Cheese making, and many more were featured at past events with these and more expected for 2009. Be sure to stop in our 1860s kitchen to visit our very own country farm wife and the Crawford County Pomona Grange. See you there!
Johnny Cash always stood at the crossroads of American popular music. With open arms, he welcomed just about any musical style, and he knew how to tell a story in song. Growing up dirt-poor, wrestling with family tragedy, striking out on his own, emerging as a songwriter, finding June Carter, the love of his life…with over 30 hits, like Walk the Line, Jackson, I’ve Been Everywhere, Folsom Prison Blues, A Boy Named Sue and the title track, Ring of Fire. With smashing medleys and amazing harmonies, this shindig will have you stompin’ your feet and shoutin’ for more!
