Pennsylvania's Great Lakes Region

Great Wineries & Breweries

The Lake Erie viticulture region has a 150 year tradition of excellence in grape growing and winemaking. Pennsylvania's moderate climate and rolling terrain provides some of the best growing conditions on the East Coast. Ice wine made in the region has gained notoriety around the world. If you've never tried ice wine, or icewine as it's sometimes written, imagine a honey-like dessert wine. Pennsylvania's ice wine grapes usually are picked in December. Pickers work almost always in the dark to prevent grapes from thawing from the sun. Production always depends on the harvest; some years, only a few thousand bottles are made.

PA Great Lakes Region is home to many wineries including: Angeli Winery, Arrowhead Wine Cellars, Conneaut Cellars Winery, Foxburg Winery, Heritage Wine Cellars, Mazza Vineyards, Penn Shore Vineyards, Presque Isle Wine Cellars and Wilhelm Winery. There are several great breweries as well, including Sprague Farm and Brew Works and Brewerie Brew Pub and Restaurant. Find out for yourself why Northwest Pennsylvania wines and beers are considered some of the finest in the world.

Penn Shore Vineyards obtained one of the first two limited winery licenses issued by the state and began crushing grapes in September 1969. They opened the doors of the winery in April of 1970. In 1978, Penn Shore had the distinction of being not only one of the first two wineries to open, but it was also the largest winery, at the time, in Pennsylvania. A tour through the cooperage area brings one face to face with tall, mammoth stainless steel storage tanks, holding up to 7,000 gallons that could be found nowhere else in the state. Altogether, the winery can accommodate 175,000 gallons of wine in cooperage.

During the tourist season, Penn Shore personnel can expect at least 150 people a day, often 250. There have been as many as 300-400 people touring the facility and tasting wines in a day.
