Heroes, soldiers, captains of industry and common folk...all have a story to tell here in PA's Great Lakes Region. Our region is steeped in history, which still lives on today.
There's the United States Brig Niagara in Erie, Pennsylvania, a reconstruction of an early 19th century warship of the United States Navy. On September 10, 1813, nine small ships defeated a British squadron of six vessels in the Battle of Lake Erie. In the aftermath, Commodore Perry wrote his famous report to General William Henry Harrison: "We have met the enemy and they are ours: two ships, two brigs, one schooner, and one sloop."
Visit The John Brown Farm, Tannery & Museum, in Crawford County, the farm of the great abolitionist John Brown which played a strategic role in the Underground Railroad. And don't forget to stop by the Drake Well Museum, in Titusville, birthplace of the oil industry in 1859. Visit the museum and discover just how many everyday items are created using oil products.
This grand, four-story, Victorian-style home, built in 1843, was home to Henry Baldwin (a US Supreme Court Justice), William Reynolds and John Earle Reynolds (two mayors of Meadville). It is now a historic museum, where tours are given and a variety of fundraising events are hosted.
Founded in 1870, the Crawford County Historical Society houses the area’s archives and genealogical material. It also contains a wide range of information and serves patrons throughout the United States.
In 1787, David Mead and his brother went scouting the wilderness for a new location to settle. Tour this two-room replica of David Mead’s log cabin, situated on the banks of French Creek.
The Society includes those interested in railroad history, collectors of railroad artifacts and model railroaders.
The former home of famed abilitionist John Brown is now a museum, which provides educational tours. There is also a gift shop, allowing visitors to take a piece of that experience with them to cherish for a lifetime.
Featuring displays of stereographic material of nearly limitless subject matter. Keystone View Co. existed as the largest worldwide producer of stereographic materials.
Built in 1870, Pennsylvania’s oldest continuously-run market structure still offers fresh local produce, eggs, meat, home-baked goods, local organic, specialty and gourmet foods and artisan crafts.

In 1885 Cambridge Springs became the center for people from miles around for the healing effects of its mineral springs. The Museum is located at 945 Mead Avenue and is open from 2-4 on Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays from Memorial Day through Labor Day and other days by appointment.
On Thursdays during the year, weather permitting, the meeting rooms are open for workdays from 10:00 until 2:00. During this time, work is done on scrap books, identification of material, and archival information. The archives are normally open during this time.
The Erie County Historical Society (ECHS) formed in 1903 as an organization dedicated to the preservation, interpretation and presentation of the rich history of Erie County. In recent years, the scope of the organization has broadened to include adjacent regions such as Lake Erie and its maritime traditions.
As homeport of the Flagship Niagara, the Erie Maritime Museum presents the story of the Niagara as the reconstructed flagship of Pennsylvania and the warship that won the Battle of Lake Erie in the war of 1812.

Take a tour, have a birthday party, even stay overnight! It all happens here at the Museum. Lunch in the loft, create a craft, breakfast with Santa – a balance of education and entertainment promotes a sense of excitement and discovery in children ages 2-12.
The Fairview Area Historical Society was formed in 1976. Its purpose is to preserve the history of the Fairview area. Local attractions include the Sturgeon House, a museum, depository of local historical and genealogical data and a meeting place. Fairview is located in Erie County, about 10 miles west of Erie, Pennsylvania. The Erie Canal and one of the routes to the west passed through this area. During the summer from, June to mid-August the Sturgeon House is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Meetings and programs are held the third Wednesday of each month from September through May, excluding December.
The fire station you are in is the second fire station built on this site. The first station was built in 1873 during the hand-pulled apparatus days. It was then known as the Eagle Hose Company. The station was approximately where the current entrance and fire alarm rooms are. The original station was two stories in height and faced south. It housed a four wheel hose cart on the first floor and had a dormitory on the second floor.
This fort was the second in a series of posts that the French built between spring 1753 and summer 1754 to assert their possession of the Ohio Country. These four posts Fort Presque Isle, Fort Le Boeuf, Fort Machault, and Fort Duquesne ran from Lake Erie to the Forks of the Ohio; they represented the last links in France’s effort to connect its dominions in Canada with those in the Illinois Country and Louisiana.

Goodell Gardens & Homestead is a non-profit, education-oriented botanical garden and arboretum on the 78-acre Goodell family farm in Edinboro PA that emulates the Goodell family passion for gardening, history and horticulture. Goodell Gardens provides for the care of a significant collection of both botanical specimens and local historical archives.
The Gardens are open to the public yearly, May thru October.
The Hazel Kibler Museum, operated by the West County Historical Association, houses a large collection of artifacts reflecting the rich history of Girard and nearby western Erie County communities, including Lake City, Springfield, and Fairview.
Founded in 1965 by the citizens of Union City as a repository of our region, the Union City Historical Society Museum’s collection is quite extensive and is the only one of its kind in Northwestern Pennsylvania.
The community of Union City, once known as Miles Mills, was founded in 1789. William Miles developed the community as a market and industrial center. Settlers found the region to be covered in primeval forest with large open tracts among the rolling hills.
Within the collection you will find many unusual items of everyday use from the 18th and 19th century rural and urban life. Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted to keep up the collection.
The Park was started in 1985 by a group of volunteers interested in preserving and promoting Greenville’s railroad history. The property was donated by Mr. Marc Rinella. The Bessemer Railroad donated the 1936 steam engine, an iron ore car and caboose #1985. Over the next few years a group of very dedicated volunteers built the museum building, the operator’s office/gift shop, the speeder shed, the maintenance shed and completely landscaped the grounds. Along the way another caboose was donated by the UP Railroad, a flat car came from Cooper Bessemer, and the W&LE caboose arrived from Norfolk Southern.
“The Mission of the Mercer County Historical Society is to collect and preserve artifacts, manuscripts, published materials and records relating to Mercer County’s pre-history and history and to use these to increase public awareness and appreciation for Mercer County’s heritage. The Society will strive to provide and promote educational opportunities connected with Mercer County history through its museum, library and archives, living history programs, oral history project, publications program, and historic sites and buildings. The Society will also encourage the preservation of materials, sites and buildings that are significant to the County’s history but which do not fall under the control of the Society.”
At Hillcrest Memorial Park in Hermitage, Pennsylvania, the 444 banners of freedom still wave, and the eternal flame shines steadily before the monument to the eight who have their lives in the mission to free their countrymen. This patriotic display is open to the public year-round.

The National Transit Building was the operational headquarters and management seat of authority and control for 84% of the domestic oil industry in the 1890’s and the early 1900’s.One of the most important men associated with the National Transit Building is John D. Rockefeller.The Oil City Civic Center, Inc. has worked together with many area organizations and trusts to continue the restoration and preservation of the building. The exterior stone and brick on the Seneca and Center Street sides have been cleaned, the boiler has been rebuilt and new water lines were run, replacing lines that were over 100 years old.
You’ll travel back in time… just by arriving at our home station, an 1892-vintage freight station in Titusville, PA. Our three hour trip will take you to where oil history began. Our tour guides describe the people and places that make up Pennsylvania Oil Country. Your family can share the fun of train travel and relive history.
The Museum is located in the Crawford Center – one of several activities in the former Crawford Memorial School Building. Our current displays include memorabilia from the early oil fields in western Pennsylvania and the Emlenton refinery. In addition, documents, and personal effects capture the local vitality of the community through its evolution. The displays provide insight into a typical American rural river community that had the pleasure of hosting some of the earliest formations of the oil industry, while yet maintaining an active farming community.
The Venango County Historical Society is located in the Hoge-Osmer house that is also a museum. The house was constructed in 1866 and is named for its original builder. Open May – December 10 am – 2 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. January – April hours 10 am – 2 pm Saturday only.
