Pennsylvania's Great Lakes Region

Great History

Heroes, soldiers, captains of industry and common folk...all have a story to tell here in PA's Great Lakes Region. Our region is steeped in history, which still lives on today.

There's the United States Brig Niagara in Erie, Pennsylvania, a reconstruction of an early 19th century warship of the United States Navy. On September 10, 1813, nine small ships defeated a British squadron of six vessels in the Battle of Lake Erie. In the aftermath, Commodore Perry wrote his famous report to General William Henry Harrison: "We have met the enemy and they are ours: two ships, two brigs, one schooner, and one sloop."

Visit The John Brown Farm, Tannery & Museum, in Crawford County, the farm of the great abolitionist John Brown which played a strategic role in the Underground Railroad. And don't forget to stop by the Drake Well Museum, in Titusville, birthplace of the oil industry in 1859. Visit the museum and discover just how many everyday items are created using oil products.

Founded in 1965 by the citizens of Union City as a repository of our region, the Union City Historical Society Museum’s collection is quite extensive and is the only one of its kind in Northwestern Pennsylvania.

The community of Union City, once known as Miles Mills, was founded in 1789. William Miles developed the community as a market and industrial center. Settlers found the region to be covered in primeval forest with large open tracts among the rolling hills.

Within the collection you will find many unusual items of everyday use from the 18th and 19th century rural and urban life. Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted to keep up the collection.

The Park was started in 1985 by a group of volunteers interested in preserving and promoting Greenville’s railroad history. The property was donated by Mr. Marc Rinella. The Bessemer Railroad donated the 1936 steam engine, an iron ore car and caboose #1985. Over the next few years a group of very dedicated volunteers built the museum building, the operator’s office/gift shop, the speeder shed, the maintenance shed and completely landscaped the grounds. Along the way another caboose was donated by the UP Railroad, a flat car came from Cooper Bessemer, and the W&LE caboose arrived from Norfolk Southern.

The Museum is located in the Crawford Center – one of several activities in the former Crawford Memorial School Building. Our current displays include memorabilia from the early oil fields in western Pennsylvania and the Emlenton refinery. In addition, documents, and personal effects capture the local vitality of the community through its evolution. The displays provide insight into a typical American rural river community that had the pleasure of hosting some of the earliest formations of the oil industry, while yet maintaining an active farming community.
